Used to vs. Would

📖 Lesson: Used to vs. Would

Definition

Both structures describe past habits that don't happen now. But there is a key difference rule.

The Rule

  • Used to: Works for EVERYTHING (Actions + States).
  • Would: Works for ACTIONS ONLY. Never use 'would' for states like be, live, have, love.

Examples

  • Action: "I *used to* play" OR "I *would* play." (Both OK)
  • State: "I *used to* live here." (OK)
  • State: "I *would* live here." (WRONG!)

Note

  • Negative: "I didn't *use to*..." (Drop the 'd')
