Prepositions at End
📖 Lesson: Prepositions at End
The Rule
In formal grammar, we shouldn't end sentences with prepositions. But in modern spoken English, it is very common and natural, especially in questions and relative clauses.
Wh- Questions
- Formal: "For whom are you waiting?" (Too stiff/old).
- Normal: "Who are you waiting for?"
- Normal: "What are you looking at?"
- Normal: "Where do you come from?"
Relative Clauses
- "He is the man (who) I spoke to."
