📖 Lesson: Indirect Questions

Definition

Indirect questions are more polite.

  • Direct: "Where is the bank?"
  • Indirect: "Could you tell me where the bank is?"

Word Order Rule (Crucial)

In indirect questions, the word order changes back to Statement Order (Subject + Verb).

  • Wrong: "Do you know where *is he*?"
  • Correct: "Do you know where he is?"

Wh- vs Yes/No

  • Wh- questions: Keep the question word. "Do you know *when*..."
  • Yes/No questions: Use "If" or "Whether". "Do you know *if* he is coming?"
